イギリス領ギアナ（British Guiana）

イギリス領ギアナは、かつて英領西インド諸島の一部を構成していたイギリスの植民地です。現在のガイアナ協同共和国にあたります。

歴史

初期

この地域に最初に足を踏み入れたヨーロッパ人は、イギリスの探検家ウォルター・ローリーとその探検隊であるとされています。ローリーは16世紀後半に南アメリカ北岸を探検し、ギアナ地域に到達しました。

イギリスの占領と統治

1796年、イギリスはオランダを占領していた際に、フランスとの交戦中にオランダ領であったエセキボ、ベルビセ、デメララの3つの植民地を占領しました。イギリスは1802年にこれらの植民地の統治権をバタヴィア共和国に返還しましたが、翌年のナポレオン戦争中に再び占領しました。1815年、正式にイギリスへと譲渡され、1831年にこれら3つの植民地が統合され、イギリス領ギアナが成立しました。

経済と社会

イギリス領ギアナは、砂糖、米、ボーキサイトなどの資源に恵まれ、これらの資源はイギリス経済にとって重要な役割を果たしました。しかし、プランテーションにおける労働力不足を補うため、インドなどから多くの人々が年季奉公労働者として移住させられ、社会構造に大きな影響を与えました。

独立

1950年代以降、イギリス領ギアナでは独立運動が活発化しました。1966年5月26日、イギリス連邦内の自治国として独立を果たし、ガイアナと国名を改めました。
