フランク・プレス

フランク・プレス（Frank Press、1924年12月4日 - 2020年1月29日）は、アメリカ合衆国を代表する地球物理学者です。彼は、その卓越した業績により、30もの名誉博士号を授与されています。

生い立ちと学歴

ニューヨークのブルックリンで生まれたプレスは、1944年にニューヨーク市立大学シティカレッジを卒業後、1949年にコロンビア大学で地球物理学のPh.D.を取得しました。大学院在学中の1945年からは、コロンビア大学のモーリス・ユーイングのもとで助手として研究を開始し、後に准教授に昇進しました。

研究活動

1955年、プレスはカリフォルニア工科大学（Caltech）に移籍し、地球物理学の教授に就任しました。カリフォルニア工科大学では、1957年から1965年まで地震学研究所の所長を務め、地震研究の発展に大きく貢献しました。その後、1965年からはマサチューセッツ工科大学（MIT）の教授となり、1982年からは地球惑星科学部の責任者として、教育と研究を牽引しました。

政府への貢献

プレスは、科学者としてだけでなく、政府の顧問としても重要な役割を果たしました。1977年から1980年まで、アメリカ合衆国の科学顧問（科学技術政策局長）を務め、科学技術政策の策定に深く関与しました。また、1972年5月24日には、モスクワにおいてウラジミール・キリリンと米ソ科学技術協力協定に署名し、国際的な科学協力の推進に貢献しました。
