バーナード・ウィリアムズ

バーナード・アーサー・オーウェン・ウィリアムズ（Bernard Arthur Owen Williams、1929年9月21日 - 2003年6月10日）は、イギリスを代表する道徳哲学者です。彼は、道徳的決定における非個人的要素を重視するカント主義や功利主義倫理学の学説に批判的な立場を取り、道徳的な実践は個人の計画と深く関わっていると主張しました。

生涯

1929年、イングランド東部で公務員の息子として生を受けました。チガウェル校を経て、1951年にオックスフォード大学ベリオール・カレッジを卒業。大学在学中にはカナダで1年間の軍務を経験し、この時に後に結婚するシャーリーと出会いました。1951年にオックスフォード大学オール・ソウルズ・カレッジの研究職を得てイギリスに帰国、1955年にシャーリーと結婚しました。1959年から1964年までロンドン大学ユニヴァーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドンに勤務し、同大学のベッドフォード・カレッジの哲学教授に就任。1967年から1987年までケンブリッジ大学で教鞭を執りました。1988年からは研究拠点をアメリカに移し、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校に籍を置きました。

ウィリアムズは学術研究の傍ら、王立委員会や政府委員会の委員としても活動しました。2002年にはケンブリッジ大学から博士号を授与され、翌2003年にローマで心不全により逝去。生涯を通じて哲学の発展に大きく貢献しました。

1971年にイギリス学士院フェロー、1983年にはアメリカ芸術科学アカデミー名誉会員に選出。1984年にはケンブリッジ大学フィッツウィリアム博物館の評議員（syndic）に就任し、後に同館の館長（chair）も務めました。1993年には王立文藝協会フェローに選出され、1999年にはナイトの称号を授与されました。イェール大学、ハーバード大学などからも名誉博士号を授与されています。

1999年に多発性骨髄腫と診断され、闘病生活を送る中、2003年6月10日に休暇で訪れたローマで心不全により亡くなりました。妻と2人の息子、長女のレベッカを残しました。ウィリアムズはローマで火葬されました。
