エスキモー (駆逐艦)

イギリス海軍駆逐艦「エスキモー」（HMS Eskimo, F75）

「エスキモー」は、イギリス海軍が建造したトライバル級駆逐艦の1隻です。第二次世界大戦中に数々の激戦に参加し、その名を歴史に刻みました。

艦歴

1936年度計画に基づき、トライバル級駆逐艦の9番艦として建造が決定。同名の艦としては2代目にあたります。1936年6月19日にヴィッカース・アームストロング社に発注され、同年8月5日に起工。1937年9月3日に進水し、1938年12月30日に就役しました。

「エスキモー」は、第二次世界大戦の勃発とともに、その戦歴を開始します。

1940年4月の第二次ナルヴィク海戦に参加。しかし、4月12日にドイツ海軍の駆逐艦ゲオルク・ティーレから雷撃を受け、艦首が吹き飛ぶという甚大な被害を受けました。応急処置として、工作艦ヴィンディクティヴに曳航されノルウェーのシェルフィヨルドで修理を受けた後、ヴィッカース・アームストロング社の工場に戻り、1940年9月までかけて本格的な修復作業が行われました。

1942年11月には、プリマスの第10駆逐戦隊に配備され、連合軍の北アフリカ上陸作戦を支援しました。1943年のハスキー作戦では、ドイツ軍の急降下爆撃機2機による攻撃を受け、大きな損傷を負いました。

1944年6月24日には、イギリス海峡でカナダ駆逐艦「ハイダ」、チェコ空軍のリベレーター機と共同で、ドイツ潜水艦「U971」を撃沈しました。また、同年6月27日から28日にかけては、駆逐艦「ヒューロン」とともにドイツ掃海艇「M4611」、哨戒艇「V213」、「V203」（いずれも元トロール漁船）と交戦。「M4611」を炎上させましたが、煙幕に突入した「エスキモー」は被弾。88mm砲弾が第1缶室で爆発し、37mm砲弾が第3缶室の主蒸気管を貫通するという大きな損傷を負いました。これにより、速力は6ノットに低下しましたが、プリマスへ帰還することができました。

戦争末期には、極東方面での作戦に参加しました。

戦後

1946年以降、「エスキモー」は掃海艇、難破船処理船、サルベージ船、宿泊艦など様々な役割で使用されました。その後、標的艦として利用され、1949年6月27日にスクラップとして売却されました。

美術館所蔵

「エスキモー」の鐘は国立海事博物館に所蔵されています。また、帝国戦争博物館には「エスキモー」に関連する写真や映像資料が保管されています。
