バビロニア年代記

バビロニア年代記は、古代バビロニアで発生した様々な事象を記録した粘土板文書群の総称です。これらの年代記は、古代史の研究における重要な史料と位置づけられており、当時の出来事を把握するための第一歩となります。

概要

バビロニア年代記は、バビロニアの天文学者によって作成されました。記録されている歴史は、ナボナッサル王の時代からパルティア時代にまで及びます。年代記の作成にあたっては、バビロニア天文日誌が参照されたと考えられています。

現在、バビロニア年代記の一部として認められている粘土板のほとんどは、19世紀に発掘され、遺物業者を通じて大英博物館に収蔵されました。しかし、その来歴が詳細に判明しているものはごくわずかです。

バビロニア年代記を読むことで、当時の権力者の視点から見たバビロニアの歴史を垣間見ることができます。これは、現代の私たちが歴史を多角的に理解する上で非常に重要な情報源となります。

発見と出版

バビロニア年代記は19世紀にバビロンで発掘された後、大英博物館に保管されました。しかし、長らく解読されないままアーカイブされていました。

初めて出版されたのは1887年で、テオフィルス・ピンチェスによって"The Babylonian Chronicle"としてBM 92502 (ABC1)が出版されました。その後、1923年にはFall of Nineveh Chronicle（ニネヴェの陥落年代記、ABC 3)が、1924年にはシドニー・スミスによりEsarhaddon Chronicle (エサルハドン年代記、ABC 14)、Akitu Chronicle (アキトゥ年代記、ABC 16)、Nabonidus Chronicle (ナボニドゥス年代記、ABC 7)が出版されました。1956年には、ドナルド・ワイズマンによって粘土板4枚分のNebuchadnezzar Chronicle (ネブカドネザル年代記、ABC 5)が出版されています。

これらの出版を通じて、バビロニア年代記は徐々に解読され、古代史研究に貢献していきました。
